Jawhar: Best Time to Visit and Places to See

By WOW Stayz | Updated October 2026

Jawhar is a small hill town in Maharashtra's Palghar district, set in the Western Ghats. It was once the capital of a princely state, and today it is known for tall waterfalls, viewpoints, a hilltop palace and Warli tribal art. It is far quieter than Lonavala or Mahabaleshwar, which is why many Mumbai and Nashik travellers now choose it for a weekend.

This guide answers the two questions most visitors ask first: the best time to visit Jawhar, and which places are worth your time. It includes month-by-month weather, 12 places with distances, a 2 and 3 day itinerary, monsoon safety tips and how to choose where to stay.

Quick Answer: Best Time to Visit Jawhar

  • For waterfalls and green hills: July to September (monsoon), and especially September to early October, just after the heavy rain.
  • For comfortable sightseeing: October to February, with pleasant days and cooler evenings.
  • For fewer crowds: March to May, though it is hot and some falls shrink or dry up.

If you can pick only one window, choose late September to October. The hills are still green, the falls are strong, the rain has eased and the trails are safer.

1. Dabhosa Waterfall

Dabhosa is Jawhar's best-known waterfall. It drops roughly 300 feet (about 90 to 95 metres) and is about 19 km from the town. It is at its best just after the monsoon, in September and October, when the flow is strong and the trails are safer than at the peak of the rain. Private operators run trekking, rappelling and kayaking here in season.

Tip: Avoid peak rain days, because approach roads and trails turn slippery. Do not climb down to the water's edge on unsafe paths, and follow any operator safety briefing before boating, as currents in the pool can be unpredictable.

2. Jai Vilas Palace

This hilltop palace was the residence of the Mukne royal family, who ruled Jawhar from 1343 until it joined India in 1947. It is built in pink stone with gardens and is the town's main heritage stop. Interior access is not always open, so check on the day. The grounds and exterior are worth the visit on their own.

3. Jay Sagar Lake

A calm lake close to the town centre, good for an easy evening walk. If you stay at Shanti Sarovar Resort, it is about a 10-minute walk away.

4. Hanuman Point and Sunset Point

Viewpoints for valley views at dusk. Go in the late afternoon. The light and the mist after the monsoon are the draw.

5. Kalmandavi Waterfall

A multi-tiered waterfall, about 100 metres high, that is described as flowing through much of the year and is most scenic in the monsoon. It is usually less crowded than Dabhosa, which makes it a good second stop.

6. Dadarkopara (Dadra) Waterfall

About 18 km from town and roughly 300 feet high. It can run dry in summer, so it is a monsoon and post-monsoon stop. Check the flow before you drive out.

7. Shirpamal

A hilltop with wide views. Local history says Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj stayed here on his way towards Surat. A marker commemorates the spot.

8. Khad-Khad Dam

A reservoir on the Domihira River with views of the Sahyadri hills. It is good for a picnic, birdwatching and a quiet afternoon.

9. Katya Maruti Temple

An old temple east of the town, set above a deep valley. It sits near Hanuman Point, so the two fit in one trip.

10. Warli Villages

The Warli are a tribal community known for their white-on-earth-red paintings of daily life. Visiting a village lets you see artists at work and buy paintings directly. Ask before you photograph people or their homes.

11 and 12. Hills Around Bhopatgad and Local Markets

If you have time, explore the surrounding hills and the town market for Warli art, local snacks and handicrafts. Confirm what is open before you go.

Jawhar Itinerary

2 Days (recommended)

Day 1: Town and Sunset. Check in. Visit Jai Vilas Palace in the afternoon, walk by Jay Sagar Lake and watch the sunset at Hanuman Point.

Day 2: Waterfalls. Leave early for Dabhosa, when it is cooler and quieter. Return for lunch, then visit Kalmandavi or a Warli village, and head back by late afternoon.

3 Days

Add Shirpamal, Khad-Khad Dam and Dadarkopara (in season) on Day 3, or just slow down with a long breakfast and a market walk.

Weekend From Mumbai

Leave early on Saturday so you arrive by lunch, do the palace and the lake, spend Sunday morning at Dabhosa, and start back by afternoon to beat the return traffic.
