Summers in Dharamkot

If you’ve ever fantasized about escaping the chaos of city life and retreating into the serene arms of the Himalayas, let me tell you about my summer in Dharamkot—a quaint, soul-soothing village perched above McLeod Ganj in Himachal Pradesh. Nestled deep in nature and still untouched by the rush of mass tourism, Dharamkot isn’t just a destination—it’s an experience. And honestly? It turned out to be one of my most cherished summer vacations in India.

Discovering Dharamkot – The Hidden Paradise

I found Dharamkot almost by chance. I was scrolling through endless lists of the best places for summer vacation in India—Shimla, Manali, Nainital... you know, the usual suspects. But I was craving something quieter, something offbeat, something that felt more like a getaway and less like a tourist trap.

That’s when I stumbled upon a little mention of Dharamkot—described as a "hippie village near Dharamshala." The more I read, the more I knew this was where I wanted to be. Tucked just 2 km above McLeod Ganj, surrounded by pine forests, with promises of yoga retreats, peaceful cafés, and mountain views—Dharamkot had all the ingredients for the perfect summer escape. So, I booked a bus to Dharamshala, packed light, and set out, not knowing I was heading straight into one of the most rejuvenating experiences of my life.

First Impressions: Stepping Into Another World

The moment I arrived in Dharamkot, it felt like I’d left the world behind. Cars stop at the edge of the village, so I walked in—backpack on, cool mountain air in my lungs, and that distinct feeling of excitement you get when you know you’ve stumbled upon something special.

Tibetan prayer flags fluttered gently above narrow pathways. Tiny cafés played Bob Marley, and travelers lounged outside with their journals and chai. Locals greeted me with warm smiles, and everywhere I looked, nature enveloped me. It was June, but the temperature was a perfect 20°C—sunny days, cool evenings, and not a hint of the sweltering heat I’d left behind in the city.

No traffic, no noise, just peace. Just stillness. Just... freedom.

Where I Stayed: WOW STAYZ2 The Lodge

One of the things I loved most about Dharamkot was the variety of stay options. Whether you’re into cozy homestays, eco-hostels, or meditation centers, there’s something for everyone. I checked into a Rustic Boutique Hotel called WOW STAYZ2 The Lodge, perched quietly on a hillside with an incredible view of the Dhauladhar mountain range.

My room? Simple, but perfect. Wooden interiors gave it that warm, earthy feel, and sunlight poured in through big windows. The real magic, though, was the balcony. From there, I could see snow-capped peaks peeking through the clouds, and every morning, I’d sip hot lemon ginger tea and watch the world wake up slowly. Sometimes, that’s all you need—a view that makes your heart feel full.

The service was just as warm as the atmosphere. The staff members were friendly, always ready with a suggestion or a story, and the whole place had this calm, nurturing energy. It felt more like a home than a hotel. In a world that’s always rushing, WOW STAYZ2 The Lodge gave me the space to breathe.

Things to Do in Dharamkot: Chill, Explore, Repeat

Honestly, Dharamkot is the kind of place where doing “nothing” feels like doing everything. But if you’re up for it, there’s plenty to experience.

  1. Triund Trek
I set off early one morning for the Triund Trek—a 9 km trail that starts right from Dharamkot. It’s not too tough, but the views? Unreal. Walking through forests, climbing to open meadows, and then camping under a sky full of stars—it was pure magic.

  2. Yoga & Meditation
I joined a session at Tushita Meditation Centre—just an hour, but it stayed with me. Sitting under tall trees, focusing on my breath, I felt more present than I had in months.

  3. Café Hopping
The food scene here is wild. From Israeli shakshuka to Italian wood-fired pizzas, the cafés in Dharamkot are cozy, quirky, and full of life. My favorite? Trek and Dine—their pancakes were a dream.

  4. Day Trips to Bhagsu & McLeod Ganj
A short walk down leads to Bhagsu Waterfall, and nearby McLeod Ganj is perfect for a lazy afternoon of exploring local markets and visiting the Dalai Lama Temple.

  5. Meet Fellow Travelers
Evenings often ended around a bonfire, sharing stories with fellow travelers. There’s a sense of community here, of shared journeys, that makes you feel like you belong.
